Sylheter Sokal Desk :: Bangladesh Awami League (AL) yesterday nominated Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, the incumbent mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC), to contest the mayoral post of the RCC election slated for December 21.
The nomination was finalized at a meeting of the AL Local Government Election Nomination Board held at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister, yesterday evening.
AL President and Local Government Election Nomination Board Chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.
“The meeting unanimously nominated Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu for contesting the mayoral post of the RCC polls,” an Awami League press release signed by Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap said.
The Election Commission (EC) on November 5 announced the schedule for holding the second election to RCC. According to the schedule, the last date for submission of nomination papers is November 22.
The nomination papers will be scrutinised between November 25 and 26 and the last date of withdrawal of nomination is December 3.
The date for symbol allocation has been set at December 4.
Rangpur Regional Election Officer Subhash Chandra Sarkar has been appointed as the returning officer of the election.
The city has got some 3, 88,421 voters and they are expected to exercise their franchise through 1177 booths of possible 196 polling stations during the election.
The EC has a legal obligation to complete the election by March 18, 2018.
The maiden election to the Rangpur City Corporation was held on December 20, 2012.
